Friends Of North End Park And Gardens

The Friends of North End Park and Gardens is a committee made of up volunteers administered by Driffield Town Council in partnership with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The park is the largest open space in the town and was donated to the children of Driffield in 1922 by Robert Holtby then of Eastgate House. The park was looked after on behalf of the children by the Driffield Urban District Council until 1974. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council now cares for the park and work closely with the Town Council and the residents.

Recently the park benefited from over £240,000 worth of funding from the Single Regeneration Budget and over the last few months extensive work has taken place in the park and gardens to improve the not only the looks of the park and gardens but also their facilities.

The Friends of North End Park and Gardens has been set up to forward these improvements and encourage and aid a greater community use of the area. Last summer the Festival Committee helped re-launch the park and gardens by holding a huge 'Party in the Park' as part of the Driffield Festival day. This proved such a resounding success that more events are planned in the future.

Our first big project is to provide facilities for the local youth, consultations have shown that a youth shelter and a basket ball ring as well as some hard standing are the most popular choices amongst our young people and the group will be approaching a number of funding avenues to raise the necessary amounts.

Up Coming Events:

In partnership with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council we aim to meet the Green Flag award scheme criteria which sets a National Standard for Parks and Green Spaces across England and Wales. The Green Flag criteria are listed below:

  1. A Welcoming Park: The park must have good signage both inside and outside the park and safe access for visitors.
  2. Health and Safety and Security: The park needs to be safe and secure, with dog controls and other facilities in place to safeguard the public. Health and Safety policies should be in place and regularly reviewed.
  3. A clean and well maintained park: Litter and other waste management issues need to be addressed. The park landscape and visitor centre should be clean and well maintained.
  4. Sustainability: Methods used in maintaining the park should have regard for the environment. Chemical use should be eliminated and materials recycled wherever possible.
  5. Conservation and Heritage: Attention should be given to the conservation and heritage value of the park. Recreational facilities should be appropriate for all sectors of the community.
  6. Marketing of the Park: The park should be promoted as a community asset through events and other activities. There should be a good provision of information and literature.
  7. A Management Plan: The Green Flag Park requires a management plan or strategy to be in place to guide the future of the park to ensure that it continues to deliver lasting improvements.

If you are interested in helping ensure the future and vitality of the North End Park and Remembrance Gardens then please contact the Town Clerk for more details about the group and how you can join in.

DRIFFIELD AND DISTRICT ACCESS GROUP

Our aim is to achieve a fully accessible environment in Driffield and surrounding area. The comfortably furnished meeting room is available to rent to other bodies at a very reasonable rate throughout the week which helps to meet the groups overhead expenses. We have installed digital photography facilities to enable wheelchair users and others who are unable to use booths to get passport type photographs for disabled badges, passports, driving licences etc., at a cost of £3.00 for four passport size photos.

Telephone 01377 240600 for full details.

As a group we locate problems of access for people with disabilities and bring them to the attention of the people where the problems lie and monitor the progress of attention to these problems. We now have the new ruling of access coming into force in 2004 which will give us more persuasive powers to get things done. We distribute free literature to inform and advise those people with disabilities. We have wheelchairs available for short term loan.

We are currently doing a survey of as many disabled people as we can so that we can produce numbers to the ruling council to encourage them to apply the new legislation and make Driffield an accessible town for all people.

There is a coffee morning regularly on the last Saturday of the month, other things we do are an Access to Art exhibiting, a concert by 'Brass Impact' and a Christmas Fayre. To which all are welcome.

Among our members we have Anna Jones who does Braille and Liz Macauley who produces a very comprehensive range of greetings cards.

Why not come and join us, all are very welcome, both able bodied and disabled. For fuller details telephone above number.

THE DRIFFIELD WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

The Driffield Women's Institute meets monthly on the first Thursday at 7.15pm in Cass Hall.

The evening meeting comprises a small element of business followed by a speaker on a topic of interest followed by light refreshments and a social chat.

The purpose of the WI is to provide a democratically controlled educational and social organisation for women offering the opportunity of working and learning together to improve their own skills and talents. It is the largest voluntary women's organisation in the United Kingdom and is non-sectarian and non-party political.

DRIFFIELD STROKE CLUB

Additional Information: Meetings take place on the first and third Tuesday of each month, from 2.00-4.00pm. They are held at the Riverside Restaurant at the back of the Blue Bell Inn on Riverhead - Driffield.

The club was formed to improve the quality of life for stroke sufferers and their carers, our aim is to help sufferers gain confidence and reintegrate back into the community.

The club has a variety of activities taking place, once a month we have speakers talking on various interesting subjects, alternate meetings there is a quiz or a game of bingo or beetle, followed by light refreshments. We also have theatre trips and day trips to places of interest.

Trained counsellors are available for private appointments, or for home visits as required. Fellow members of the group offer a wide variety of personal experiences in coping with grief and are aware of many different reactions to loss. They are able to give warmth and understanding to fellow sufferers.

The Social Support Group meets every Saturday at the Blue Bell, Riverhead Driffield, from 10.30-12.00. Events such as monthly Sunday lunches, outings, theatre trips, and fund raising activities for local charities are regularly organised. New friendships are formed within the group.
