CHRISTMAS IN DRIFFIELD
The Christmas lights are funded, erected and maintained by the Town Council. They are switched on each year by the Mayor at the Late Night Shopping Event that takes place on the first Thursday of December. The event begins at 6.00pm and features the Christmas Market, fairground rides, music and singing from the Driffield Town Band, local artists and school children.
NEW YEAR SCRAMBLING
This age old tradition is unique to the town of Driffield and has its origins in the eighteenth century. The event takes place each year on January 2nd or the next working day. The Mayor greets all the children in the station yard at 9.00am and they are accompanied by Town Councillors who take the children through the main street shouting the ancient rhyme to shopkeepers in return for money and goodies:
"Here we are at our town end
A shoulder of mutton and a crown to spend
Are we downhearted? No!
Will We Win? Yes!"
